Summer 2021 Internships

Multiple Summer 2021 Internships are available with Flenker Land Architecture Consultants, LLC (FLAC).   The internships are designed to expose students to a professional planning and design studio environment, with particular focus on urban placemaking, material research, community planning and design, as well as various professional environmental service tasks.

The primary focus of each internship will be working with the project landscape architect in developing community transportation improvement plans through the firm's participation in the national award winning Iowa's Living Roadways (ILR) Community Visioning program.  The internship may also offer exposure to other types of projects outside of the ILR visioning program.




Compensation, Start Date, Housing/Transportation

Salary: Hourly, with hourly wage rate to commensurate with
             experience and skills; no benefits. 

​Length of Internships: Varies: 8 to 15 weeks.

Travel: Occasional travel to project sites and meetings may be required.  Overnight stays are not anticipated.

Start Date: June 1, 2021, possibly earlier depending on successful candidates availability and FLAC's project schedules

Housing & Transportation: Housing is not provided.  Successful candidates will be responsible for arranging and providing their own housing.   Transportation to and from work is not provided.  Successful candidates will need to have their own vehicle and will be responsible for arranging and providing their own transportation to and from work. 

Application Requirements

  • Students pursuing degrees in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Community & Regional Planning, or other closely related fields are encouraged to apply.  

  • Preference will be given to 4th | 5th year and graduate students, as well as new college graduates.

  • Working knowledge of: Sketch Up | AutoCad | Adobe Design Suite | MS Office Suite | ESRI ArcGIS

  • Strong understanding of core landscape architecture skills (i.e.: grading, construction knowledge, hardscape and plant materials). 

  • Possess exceptional graphic and digital production skills - the ability to produce high-quality computer models and renderings is preferred. Attention to detail is critical.

  • Positive attitude; thorough understanding of the English language and excellent communication skills (both oral and written).

  • Desire to learn; ability to work effectively both independently and with others; ability to organize, compile, and record information accurately; ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and accomplish tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Flexibility and ability to work remotely - must have access to the internet, and the internet must be of sufficient speed (download and upload speed) to handle the needs of working remotely with large file sizes.
                                                       
  • Willing to work occasional evenings to meet the expectations of the job description and project schedules.            

  • Self-motivated and able to take directions and follow verbal and written instructions as well as retain information.       
          

Primary Position Responsibilities Include

  • Perform basic Landscape Architectural tasks under direct supervision of PLA, as necessary to support various project requirements.

  • Develop graphic renderings for presentations (both hand and computer) for client review;

  • Assist in preparing reports, planning and design documents and other information as requested;

  • Conduct field work in built, constructed and natural environments (measuring, documenting, monitoring, assisting with field data collection, etc.);

  • Participate in project meetings.

​Physical Requirements

  • ​Able to walk, hike and stand for long periods of time on different surfaces including walkways, trails, stairs, and undeveloped areas such as prairies, wetlands, floodplains, and woodlands as well as on sites under construction and along transportation corridors.
    ​
  • Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds.

  • Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces in various types of weather.
    ​
  • Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as at a computer screen or for detailed paperwork.

Working Conditions

  • Standard work hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm CST (includes a  one hour non-paid lunch break) and may occasionally include evenings as required for meetings and design workshops.  These standard hours are for both office and remote work. 

  • Depending upon the status of the COVID-19 pandemic, intern's skills and abilities and at FLAC's sole discretion and approval, the internship(s) may be done remotely instead of at FLAC's office, or a hybrid of both virtual and in office work may be utilized.

  • Position may require occasional outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered.
