Fall 2017 Planning/Environmental Co-op

This position is for a  Planning/Environmental Co-op student with Flenker Land Architecture Consultants, LLC (FLAC).  FLAC's office is located approximately 20 minutes north of the Quad Cities (Davenport, Iowa).   Flenker Land Architecture Consultants, LLC is a professional planning and design firm that works with both public and private sector clients primarily in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.  This is a part-time temporary, paid position. Starting in mid to late September, completing in late November to early December 2017. Expected work schedule is 16 - 20 hours per week.   We will consider hours best-suited to our business needs and the candidates.  

The successful applicant will provide knowledge and judgment to complete assignments consisting of numerous steps that vary in nature and sequence.   The employee works semi-independently following written or verbal instructions that are general in nature.   Work products and procedures are subject to review by a project manager..

Compensation & Travel

​​Salary: Hourly, with hourly wage rate to commensurate with
             experience; no benefits.
​Work Schedule::: This is a  part time position with an expected work schedule of  16 to 20 hours per week.  Hours will be as best suited to our business needs and the candidates.
Travel: Occasional local travel may be required. Overnight stays
             are not anticipated.
Start Date: Mid to Early September 2017
​End Date: Late November 2017 / Early December 2017

Education Requirements

  • 1 - 3 years of experience in Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Forestry, Geography, Natural Resources, Horticulture or closely related field.
                                          OR
  • Within 24 months of graduating with a Bachelors or Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Natural Resources, Geography, Horticulture or closely related field. 

Position Requirements

  • Have permanent right to work in United States.                  
  • Have dependable vehicle and provide own transportation to and from work and to and from project sites.
  • Arrange for and provide own housing. 
  • Acceptable driving record with a valid driver's license;
  • Drug and tobacco free.                                                             
  • Willing to work occasional Saturdays to meet the expectations of the job description and project schedules.                  
  • Strong communication, leadership, and technical skills;             
  • Self-motivated and able to take directions and follow verbal and written instructions as well as retain information.
  • Exceptional attention to detail;
  • Able to walk, hike and stand for long periods of time on different surfaces including walkways, trails, stairs, and undeveloped areas such as prairies, wetlands, and woodlands as well as on sites under construction and along transportation corridors within the right-of-way;.
  • Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds.
  • Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces in various types of weather.
  • Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on project such as at a computer screen or for detailed paperwork.

Position Responsibilities Include

  • Perform basic planning and field inventory tasks  as necessary to support various project requirements.;
  • Assist in preparing spreadsheets, reports, and planning documents and other information as requested;
  • Conduct field work in built, constructed and natural environments (measuring, documenting, monitoring, tagging, marking, and otherwise assisting with field data collection, etc.);
  • Help manage document control including: filing; scanning and archiving.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of and skill in:
    • the proficient use of Microsoft Office Word and Excel;
    • applying rules of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
    • field identification of plant material
  • Knowledge of and some skill and experience in working with the following a plus, but not required:
    • AutoCAD, GIS/ArcView,  Illustrator, Sketch-Up Pro, 
      ​Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Ability to:
    •  accomplish tasks with minimal supervision;
    • organize, compile and record information accurately;
    • manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
    • identify plant material with or without botanical field guide aid;
    • operate a personal computer.

Working Conditions

  • .Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, wind, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered.  During the summer, early fall and late spring, the outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled workday; during the fall, early winter and spring, some days can  be below 30 degrees for entire workday.
  • Standard work hours are
    ​Monday - Friday: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, and may occasionally include Saturdays as required.
