Field Technician

This is a temporary position for a Field Technician with Flenker Land Architecture Consultants, LLC (FLAC),  which is located approximately 20 minutes north of the Quad Cities (Davenport, Iowa).   . Flenker Land Architecture Consultants, LLC is a professional planning and design firm that works with both public and private sector clients primarily in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. 

The field technician will work primarily outdoors in natural environments and along transportation corridors; some office work can also be expected.  This position may require periodic overnight stays during the week for out of town projects.   Expected work schedule is 24 - 32 hours per week..   We will consider hours best-suited to our business/project needs and the candidates.  This temporary position is anticipated to start immediately and last for 8 weeks.

The successful applicant will provide knowledge and judgment to complete assignments consisting of numerous steps that vary in nature and sequence.   The employee works semi-independently following written or verbal instructions that are general in nature.   Work products and procedures are subject to review by a project manager..​

Compensation & Travel

Salary: $ 10.00 - $ 16.00 Hour, with wage rate to commensurate
             with experience.   No benefits.
​Work Schedule:: This is a  temporary position with an expected              work schedule of  24 to 32 hours per week.  Hours will                  be as best suited to our business/project  needs and
             the  candidates.
Travel: Travel to project sites and meetings will be required. 
             Overnight stays at a motel can be expected depending
             on project location.
Start Date: Immediately
​End Date: 8 weeks from start date.

Education/Work Experience Requirements

  • High school graduate or G.E.D and previous surveying and inspection work experience, OR                                   
  • Associates degree in Horticulture, Botany, Environmental Studies, Surveying, or closely related field,  OR 
  •  1 to 2 years of technical training or study towards a degree in Horticulture, Environmental Studies, Botany, Landscape Architecture or closely related field.
  • Previous surveying, inspection experience preferred but not required.

Position Requirements

  • Have permanent right to work in United States.                   
  • Have dependable vehicle and provide own transportation to and from work and to and from project sites.
  • Drug and tobacco free.                                                            
  • Willing to work long hours and occasional Saturdays if necessary to meet the expectations of the job description and project schedules. 
  •  Self motivated and able to take directions and follow verbal and written instructions as well as retain information.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Able to walk, hike and stand for long periods of time on different surfaces including walkways, trails, stairs, and undeveloped areas such as prairies, wetlands, and woodlands as well as on sites under construction and along transportation corridors.
  • Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces in various types of weather.
  • Able to spend majority of work related time outdoors.
  • Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on project such as at a computer screen or for detailed paperwork.

Position Responsibilities Include

  • Assist in the inspection of site and landscape construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and prepare associated documentation and submit to Project Manager.  Monitor and report progress of contractors to Project Manager to ensure work meets proper specifications and quality of construction and requirements of associated permits.
  • Collect and organize field data for projects to compile information necessary for the planning and/or design phase of a project.
  • Assist with wetland delineations and monitoring.
  • Preform all work duties and activities in accordance with proper procedures and safety practices.
  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
  • Use GPS gear occasionally for job site inspection, monitoring and site information collection.
  • Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Ability to utilize effective written, verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English.
  • Ability to work independently and organize tasks to complete projects by assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to accurately read, understand and interpret project plans and specifications.
  • Ability to learn basic plant identification methods.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret moderately complex and varied types of information.
  • Ability to monitor contractors and report progress to Project Manager
  • Ability to accurately perform arithmetic calculations and mathematical functions for determining quantities and areas (trigonometry and geometry).
  • Ability to work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities.

Working Conditions

  • .Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, wind, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered.  During the summer, early fall and late spring, the outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled workday; during the fall, early winter and spring, some days can  be below 30 degrees for entire workday.
  • Standard work hours for FLAC are ​Monday - Friday:
    8:00 am - 4:30 pm, however,  the schedule of the Field Technician may vary from this depending on project schedules and the businesses needs.
